TOP 6 REASONS TO VISIT NKWICHI DURING RAINY SEASON

Rainy season can generally be depressing in most parts of the world. Cold, wet and muddy, not at Nkwichi Lodge! Here are some of the top reasons to visit us:

1. Lush Green Vegetation – If you are into your nature, there are not many places that can rival Nkwichi in terms of proximity to our beloved nature. Our hand crafted chalets are surrounded by beautiful vegetation that is more defined in the rainy season. From the gardens in the nearby communities to the wide variety of plants and trees found in miombo woodlands. If green happens to be your favourite colour, you couldn’t choose a better place!

2. Crystal clear Lake – Lake Malawi being one of the most bio diverse lakes in the world, there is plenty to see if you are a keen snorkeler, with over three hundred cichlids to see, the crystal clear waters of lake Niassa offer a wonderful insight into the world of these multi coloured fish. As one of our return guests, who has been visiting Nkwichi for over ten years puts it “Blue, yellow, gold and orange all around you” according to her, definitely one of the reasons that has kept her coming year on year.

3. Rivers and Water falls – Every year, we have the pleasure of seeing the Nkwichi river break into the lake, this tradition year upon year announces the arrival of the rains in earnest, nature at its best! The Nkwichi river flows into the lake from the mountains, it offers a beautiful hike along a green escarpment. As luck would have it, we have a beautiful, glistening water fall between the months of January to March. As Virginia Alison puts it “There is a waterfall in every dream. Cool and crystal clear, it falls gently on the sleeper, cleansing the mind and soothing the soul.”

4. Birds and wildlife – For keen birders and lovers of wildlife, rains offer the best chance to spot some of the rare species, with animals such as antelope and zebra coming down from the scenic mountains behind Nkwichi looking for water. Our trained field guides offer guided walks to some of the best views of the lake, along the way the chance to see wildlife or a wide variety of bird species. Nothing beats seeing an animal in its natural habitat.

5. Thundery show – Nature’s own show! Sit by the beach with a Gin and tonic, starry nights and picture perfect lightning and thunder storms over the lake.

6. Sunsets – Usually the sunsets are an everyday show at Nkwichi, but during the rainy season it becomes even more outstanding… At the end of the day, sitting on the soft, squeaking sands, comes the favourite rainy season spectacle; the celestial lightshows. The sunsets explode from the clouds, refracting through every air-borne water particle to create a different Impressionist masterpiece to the distant storms, grumbling as if pestered by Sephardic paparazzi.
