Community Development
The third leg of the African Pot is the Manda Wilderness Community Trust (MWCT), established as a Charity in the UK in 2004 to support the communities located in the Manda Wilderness. Following the Covid pandemic, the Trust was closed in 2022. We hope that another vehicle can be set up in the future to continue it’s work.
The MWCT works with the sixteen villages in the Manda Wilderness on projects like the construction of village schools or supporting sustainable agriculture. The projects are agreed jointly between the villages and the Trust and are managed as a partnership. The Trust provides technical expertise and the more expensive materials.
The villages contribute their time and energy, and local materials, and take responsibility for the delivery of the projects. In this way the development programme secures active community participation and provides people with better skills.
The activities of the MWCT include:
- Construction of 13 primary schools in the Manda Wilderness area
- Construction of the district’s first maternity clinic
- Construction of the district’s first Girls’ Boarding House, promoting girls’ education
- Training more than 500 farmers in modern farming methods
- Small business and vocational training
- Organisation of sporting and cultural events such as the annual Community Manda Wilderness Festival, the highlight of which is the Choir Festival
The Charity was run by an independent board of Trustees appointed for their expertise in African development. Donations have come from guests at the lodge, friends, schools and churches in Europe and the USA as well as donor government development agencies working in Mozambique.
The Social Yearbook, presented by Social Mozambique, is compiled as a celebration and recognition of successful social activities in Mozambique. Manda Wilderness is thrilled to be featured therein - you can find our story in this link on Page 50 in English, or Page 130 in Portuguese.
